An inaccurate disposition, missing sentence-completion date or mistaken identity can complicate restoration review and future background checks.
Start with your own criminal-history record
The FBI provides Identity History Summary checks. DOJ’s FFRR FAQ says applicants who believe their history is incorrect should first obtain the FBI or state record.
Challenge the source information
Supporting documents such as certified dispositions, amended judgments, expungement orders or restoration orders can be important when challenging incomplete or inaccurate records.
A NICS denial has its own challenge process
The FBI offers a separate NICS denial-reason and challenge process that can identify the prohibiting category and record-holding agency. See the NICS denial guide.
Record correction is different from restoration
Correction addresses inaccurate information. Restoration provides relief from a disability that otherwise exists. The legal path depends on which problem the record presents.
